* England - 1st July 2007
Scotland - 26th March 2006
Wales - 2nd April 2007
Northern Ireland - 30th April 2007
* Enforcement
Employers should produce a smoking policy to include procedures for dealing with non compliance.
Policing the ban will be the responsibility of the respective local authority.
* Fines
£200 for not displaying proper signage.
Up to £2500 for not enforcing the ban.
* Future Legislation
Employers will need take their cigarette breaks outside and in many cases this may be a public area.
Under existing legislation an £80 fixed penalty is in place to fine individuals who drop their cigarette butt in public.
Future legislation proposes a £110 fine for business where a litter problem exists outside their premises if a public area.
