With raised awareness of climate change issues employers now seem to be more proactive promoting their environmental policy and ways to reduce their carbon footprint.

The chart below shows the C02 emissions by end use in offices. The data is taken from a DEFRA funded research (Pout et al 1998). 

Since this research was carried out comfort cooling (air conditioning) is now installed as standard in the majority of new offices. This we believe will add to a significant percentage increase in this category when the data updated.
10 Simple Things You Can Do At Work:
UNISON have produced a printable PDF sheet '10 simple things you can do at work' to help offices become more environmentally friendly.
  1. Turn office equipment off standby when not in use.
  2. Take the stairs and not the lift.
  3. Do not overheat the office in winter.
  4. Do not obstruct radiators and install better insulation.
  5. Turn off unnecessary lighting.
  6. Turn office equipment and lights off at the end of each day.
  7. Set up a green travel plan. i.e. cycling to work, car sharing, etc.
  8. Reduce, reuse and recycle.
  9. Reduce the amount of water used at work
  10. Act collectively to reduce barriers and become part of the solution.
