The first step to become an approved fist aider as defined by the Health and Safety (first aid) regulations 1981 is to attend an Fist Aid at Work (FAW) or Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course.

Only on successfully completion of the course will first aiders be deemed to have the required competence and qualification to administer first aid in the workplace. A certificate will be issues and this will be valid for a 3 year period. First aiders will be required to renew their training every 3 years by again completing the appropriate course. To ensure first aiders maintain their skills it is recommended an annual half day refresher course is completed but this is not a mandatory requirement.

Emergency First Aid at Work 
This is normally a 1 day course (6 hours) and gives very basic instruction so the first aider to deliver emergency first aid to employees who becomes injured or ill at work.

First Aid at Work
This is normally a 3 day course (8 hours) and includes Emergency First Aid at Work and also covers other specific injuries and conditions
