It is vitally important that employees familiarise themselves with the fire arrangements in the workplace.

In particular know what action to take on discovering a fire or hearing the fire alarm;-

  • how to raise the alarm

  • procedure for calling the fire brigade

  • evacuation procedure

  • escape routes

  • assembly points

  • who the fire marshals or roll call officer are

  • where the fire extinguishers are located

  • how to use the fire extinguishers

At all times employees should demonstrate a good personal example of fire safety and ensure local housekeeping is maintained to a high standard by keeping gangways and fire exits clear. Under no circumstances should fire doors be propped open (unless on magnetic closures that close on a fire alarm). Fire extinguishers should only be used for the purpose they have been designed and never used as doorstops.
