Where a fire alarm is required to evacuate the workplace the regulations require the alarm to be continuous when activated.

The fire alarm system should also be regularly inspected and serviced as follows;-

Daily
Check to ensure the panel records 'normal operation'.

Weekly
At least one detector, call point or end line switch etc should be operated to test the system (the interval between test on different zones should not exceed 13 weeks).

Quarterly
The system should be inspected by a competent person (usually a specialist engineer) after a certificate should be issued.

Annually
Self contained smoke alarms should be cleaned and the batteries changed.
