All emergency lighting units now display a picture of a running man with a directional arrow to direct building users to the nearest fire exit. The running man is to indicate the urgency required and is not an invitation to sprint out of the building. You should, of course, leave by the quickest possible means but also maintain the safety of yourself and others.

The emergency lighting system should be regularly inspected and serviced as follows;-

Daily
Check all lamps in a maintained system are lit. Record any faults in the logbook and detail action taken.

Monthly
Energise each emergency light from its battery by simulation of a failure of the supply to the normal lighting for a period sufficient only to ensure each lamp is illuminated. Record any faults in the logbook and detail action taken.

Six Monthly
Energise each emergency light from its battery by simulation of a failure of the supply to the normal lighting for a period of 1 hour. During this period the all luminaries and/or signs should be examined to ensure that they are functioning correctly. Record any faults in the logbook and detail action taken.

Yearly
Energise each emergency light from its battery by simulation of a failure of the supply to the normal lighting for a period of its full duration. During this period the all luminaries and/or signs should be examined to ensure that they are functioning correctly. Record any faults in the logbook and detail action taken.
Check each emergency lighting installation for compliance.
