The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

Here we concentrate on part 3 of the act which applies to service providers. If your business provides goods, services or facilities to the public then part 3 of the act is applicable.
From the 1st October 2004 business will have to consider the physical improvement of premises they are responsible for to ensure disabled people are not discriminated against.

This may include:-
  • Access ramps for wheel chair users
  • Installing a disabled toilet
  • Providing clearer signage for the visually impaired
  • Installing an induction loop system for deaf people
The act refers to reasonable adjustments which means making the necessary adjustments at a cost that does not force businesses to go bankrupt. If you do not make the changes you may be open to court action.
